Oscar nominated, and winner of the Bafta for Best Documentary, 13th is a fiercely intelligent dissection of the American prison system. It’s an important film, not just because it calmly dismantles the policies of generations of politicians, Republican and Democrat, revealing the injustices within them, but because it does it so meticulously and with such brilliance. It is rare for a film to assume such a high level of intelligence in its audience. Doing so allows DuVernay to elevate 13th to a level rarely seen in popular cinema and gives its central argument a power and a precision to match.
