Baar Baar Dekho is a romantic comedy with a Groundhog Day-esque high concept, but instead of living the same day over and over, Jai Verma is propelled through time, moving forward or backward several years each time he goes to sleep. Every time he wakes up, he has to work out what he has happened and what he has done in the years that have passed by, why his career is going so well, why his marriage falling apart. The structure works both as a narrative device and as a metaphor for how we can sometimes seem to be sleepwalking through our lives. And while director Nitya Mehra considers her film a love story, not science fiction, the sections of Baar Baar Dekho set in the later years of Jai’s life are a brilliantly subtle and smart vision of our future.
