Call of Heroes

This beautiful, brutal tale of a fight for justice during the disorder following the dissolution of the Qing Dynasty was one of the best action films of 2016. Louis Koo is superb as the depraved son of a military governor, wandering the countryside, looking for trouble, murdering for sport. He meets his match in a gruff local lawman (played by Sean Lau, in his first martial arts film in twenty years) and a mysterious stranger (Eddie Peng). But the real hero of the film is Sammo Hung’s fight choreography. The story progresses via a series of brilliant fight scenes, each forwarding the narrative like songs in a musical. Keep an eye out for ‘Chekov’s surprisingly massive pile of earthenware flagons’.
