Moloko

Do You Like My Tight Sweater?

I was a little bit late getting to Moloko. I missed Do You Like My Tight Sweater? when it came out. For some reason I had got it into my head that they were trip hop, or similar, another Sneaker Pimps or Morcheeba. But they weren’t like that at all, were they? They were bananas.

Not that there was anything wrong with trip hop, just that for a while it was everywhere. Moloko was actually exactly what I needed. (We have already established that I didn’t actually hear it at the time but there you are. They were in the right place at the right time and I was somewhere else entirely. Probably listening to Nine Inch Nails or something equally ghastly.)

Bananas is probably a bit strong. There are moments where Do You Like My Tight Sweater teeters on the edge of novelty but it always manages to stay on the right side of wacky (ie it is never ever wacky). It concentrates on the darker side of nonsense, edging you toward the surreal and away from the silly. It’s largely concerned with ‘the sexiness’ too. Sure, there are bits about ostriches and monkeys and the like, but try playing it to a child without getting a lot of difficult questions you hadn’t really planned on answering for a few years. You can’t.
