Ben’s Brilliant Best Albums of the 1990s. No. 86.

The Roots

Illadelph Halflife

I’m not even going to pretend I was cool enough to buy this when it came out. Looking at the dates, I was probably listening to Space or something like that. I definitely owned the Cast album. I listened to The Holy Bible a lot. And that’s fine. Different music works for you at different times in your life.

Equally, I’m not going to pretend to be some great expert on The Roots. My reason for picking this album over Do You Want More!???!!? or Things Fall Apart is almost entirely that Illadelph Halflife is just the one I’ve listened to the most since I signed up to a streaming service and suddenly had access to loads of The Roots albums.

I never claimed to be a scholar or a music scientist or anything. It’s just a list of great albums, mate.
