Ben’s Brilliant Best Albums of the 1990s. No. 92. The Orb – Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld

If I am being totally honest, I’m not sure if The Orb were actually any good or not. The first time my dad heard them he said, “OK. They sound like Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield. I used to like that.” And the further in time I move from him saying that the less offended I am by his statement and the more I recognise the truth of it. The Orb are easy listening music. I don’t think you can deny that. All you can do is choose whether or not to be upset about it.

I choose not to. However, in my weaker moments I do wonder whether everything on Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld, with the exception of Perpetual Dawn, is utter tripe. And actually, even Perpetual Dawn has that stupid flute bit. Maybe it isn’t that good an album…

Oh crap.
