Ben’s Brilliant Best Albums of the 1990s. No. 75. Prince – ‘Love Symbol’ Album

I would be the first to admit that the Love Symbol album isn’t a model of consistency. It starts strongly and then begins to flag a little. But that start, especially My Name Is Prince, Sexy MF, and The Morning Papers? Most bands don’t produce that much brilliance in a lifetime. So yeah, I will forgive the crap reggae bit on Blue Light and the segues and everything else that isn’t quite up to scratch. I will forgive that willingly. I want to forgive it. I want to.

Because that’s Prince, isn’t it. Highs that are unbelievably high, lows that are surprisingly low. A Purple Rain here, an unbearable jazz album there. Genius isn’t consistent. You can’t get close to the sun without being burned.
