Ben has seen… The Favourite

The start of the year is, in Britain at least, Oscar season which means that, dependent on the quality of a year’s quality movies, January can set you up nicely for the year or leave a bad taste in your film consuming mouth. Last year I started my cinema going with an All the Money in the World / Brad’s Status double bill, the awfulness of which I never fully recovered from. 2017 was a mixed bag of mixed bags: Manchester by the Sea, La La Land, Silence, xXx: The… Read more Ben has seen… The Favourite

2018 in Superhero Films, from my least favourite to my favourite

It was quite the year for superhero films. Quite the year. And while everyone is always banging on about how there are millions of them and wasn’t it better when films were about Passages to India or whatever, and that superhero films are some sort of reflection of a fascist concept of something or other, it is worth pointing out that there were only nine of them, cinema has been dominated by action films of one hue or another since 1977, and nobody has convincingly explained why or how superhero… Read more 2018 in Superhero Films, from my least favourite to my favourite

My Favourite Songs of 2018. A Top 40, of sorts.

2018 was my first full year of actual streaming. I should have made the move from cds years ago. So many musics, all available, lovely. Even limiting myself to one song per artist my top 40 became a 42 but it could easily have stretched to a 100 or so. There was a lot of good music this year. (I suspect there is a lot of good music every year, but being able to stream stuff made it really easy for me to find, I should probably revisit the last… Read more My Favourite Songs of 2018. My Favourite Children’s Television of 2018

Having dedicated a month to children’s tv that I abhore, I thought it would be churlish not start my month of lists of loveliness by celebrating all the brilliant children’s programmes that 2018 brought. Credit where it is due and all that. Sadly,  2018 brought no new episodes of Sarah & Duck, and now that Dr Ranj is a big potatoes of Saturday night dancing telly we may never get another series of Get Well Soon. But there were a few reasons to be cheerful among the Paw Patrols and… Read more My Favourite Children’s Television of 2018

Lists of my favourite stuff of 2018 – an introduction

Happy New Year! Let’s start off 2019 by noting that I know I’m not stupid. Everyone else did their ‘Best of 2018’ lists in December, I know that. I like to wait until a year has completely finished before I weigh up my superfluous opinions and inflict them on people. I say people, I mean you. You’ve got a month of this, dear reader. Get used to it is my advice. I’m not doing much in the way of ‘Best of’ lists though, because who am I to say what… Read more Lists of my favourite stuff of 2018 – an introduction

What am I planning to do with the blog in 2019?

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooh exciting So, yeah, I’m enjoying doing the monthly theme thing, so that will continue. January will be my big round-up of all my favourite things of 2018. Books, films, you know the sort of thing. But I will be adding two extra bits. On a Saturday (most Saturdays) I will be adding a review of something I saw at the cinema that week, and on a Sunday I will be doing a little recap of things that happened to me that week and what I’m looking forward to happening… Read more What am I planning to do with the blog in 2019?
