Earlier this year I attempted a countdown of my favourite albums of the 1990s. It didn’t really work. The rankings felt pretty arbitrary and there are only so many ways you can say, “I think this album is good,” before things get a bit boring. More worryingly, I became painfully aware of how much my opinions of the albums I chose (and even more so the ones I didn’t choose) were caught up with memories, nostalgia and the like. Relistening to stuff I started to question my judgement. “Is this actually a good album, or did I just like it when I was younger?”
I did quite enjoy writing about music though, so I had a bit of a think about how I could do things differently (and, you know, better). To eliminate the nostalgia part of the problem I am going to concentrate on records from the 1970s, a decade I don’t have any memory of. To avoid the arbitrariness of a countdown, I’m just going to write about records that I think are interesting. Some will be great, some will be terrible. Some will be albums, some will be singles. They won’t be in any particular order. It will just be some records that you might like to listen to.
Anyway, here are the albums I have written about so far…
(I’m not actually starting these until the 3rd of November btw. It gives you something to look forward to though, doesn’t it?)
